How to market on MySpace
To the savvy online marketer, It is completely obvious what a goldmine MySpace is. With free access to over 215 Million users and an easy profile set up, the potential to make extreme profits through effective and creative marketing is limitless. For those who are in the know, money comes pretty easy. And unfortunately, for every successful marketer on MySpace, there is a basketful of novices.
First let us start with the novice to Myspace. If you are doing these things to your MySpace proflie, you can kiss your conversion rates, opt-in rates, sales, and even your profile itself goodbye.
1. You have a crazy layout that you think is cool but really it’s too distracting or takes too long to load so people leave before they even start reading.
2. You are blatantly selling using banners, blinking opt-in pages, huge “in your face” videos.
3. You have awkward layouts where the readers’ eye generally doesn’t know where to look next.
4. You have too many links to too many of your websites.
Look, It’s understandable where you are coming from and to your defense, we have all been “that guy” at one time or another. If you want to have success with MySpace marketing, don’t forget the fundamentals of sales.
You have to keep in mind that it’s not about you. It’s about getting into the mind of your targeted prospects. Just because you think your site looks “pimped out” doesn’t mean your prospects want to see that too.
Put yourself in your prospects shoes. If you ran into a site that was filled with huge banners, countless links, and multi-colored blinking neon fonts, how would you react?
The message that a site like that puts out is, “Thanks for coming onto my page, now I am about to hard sell you on my opportunity”. And of course, the last thing your prospect wants, is to be pitched yet another business opportunity.
Just as there is a definite blueprint for online success, there are also a few simple guidelines you can follow to see massive results using MySpace as an effective marketing medium.
1. Keep it simple. Choose a layout without pictures repeated in the background, more than 2-3 color schemes, and has well aligned content boxes. The most common mistake people make is to think they have to create a stunning, dazzling profile.
2. Remove any blatant banners, links, or ads from your page.
3. Focus on selling you. Use the About Me section to sell you as a person. Tell your story. Find a way to connect with your prospects. Get into the mind of your prospect and tailor your message that answers some of the questions they might be having.
4. Remove your business overviews. You can link them to those later on once you establish a relationship. Remember, it’s all about relationship building!
5. If you are going to include videos, put up videos of you or something you want to share that shows your character. Make sure it brands you as someone people would like to join. Be yourself and people will connect with you. They’re out there.
6. Re-size your videos so that they aren’t “in your face”. This is also a good move because by re-sizing them, it doesn’t affect your layouts alignment.
7. When looking at your page ask yourself, “Does this look professional?” Does it look like a sales page or does this person really have something to offer and help me in the process?
8. Never accept or give comments with huge annoying html. Some of these postcard size comments are nice and “cute” but for business, they are unprofessional. And it ruins the clean outline of your page.
9. Add 1-2 links that lead to your capture or business page written into your story. Don’t make it distracting. You want to be saying, “Oh, and by the way, here’s my link if you want…” not “Click Here, Click now, if you don’t you’re a loser. HuHuHuWahahaha”.
10. Browse around. Here’s a challenge, keep your existing profile. Make another profile following the guidelines mentioned, then split test the results.
MySpace is just one marketing medium we can all take advantage of to make that money we deserve. Learning to use them in the right way can increase your profits dramatically while preserving the integrity of the platform. Let’s remember, keep it simple. Always think about your prospects first, then take action!
